"Oh to see without my eyes, the first time that you kissed me."
- Sufjan Stevens.
"Call Me By Your Name" is green; a soft, shiny green of grass in summer in the 19th century when no cars can harm those colors - but feet stumble upon it with happiness. It's the exceptional of those blue, as the sky put on a bright shirt in those days. Who dares to say it is blue? When the sun hits you with its arrogant lights and bends the truth?
"Call Me By Your Name" was first released in 2017 directed by Luca Guadagnino and screen-played by James Ivory - its roots in a remarkable romance book named the same by author Andrรฉ Aciman. By the time this movie appeared, the world was moving extremely fast as I paced out in the dimension of my imagination. Others believe this masterpiece is a fever dream, while I tended to call it "transcutaneous pacing" as the phrase happened to dash without my recognition but saved me from the uneven feeling when I was watching the world pass by. Of course, the screen-play received a massive amount of atteintion and gained many awards for its amazing cinematic - which I will discuss more in this section:
The opening of "Call Me By Your Name" directed by Luca Guadagnino is undeniably cinematic, capturing the essence of the story and setting the tone for the rest of the film. From the mesmerizing cinematography to the carefully chosen soundtrack, every element works harmoniously to immerse the viewers into the world of the film.
One of the most striking aspects of the cinematic nature of the opening lies in the cinematography. The camera glides effortlessly through the beautiful Italian countryside, capturing the idyllic setting of the film. The long takes and fluid movements create a sense of elegance and fluidity that adds to the overall aesthetics of the movie. Furthermore, natural light enhances the visuals, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the narrative. Medium shot is commonly seen in the almost 4-minute opening - as the director's intention was to sequences where dialogues or a small group of people are in the frame while also capturing their surroundings for better storytelling.
In addition to the visual aspects, the language plays a significant role in establishing the cinematic nature of the film's opening. The choice of French, English, and Italian merched to enhance the diversity of knowledge implies that Elio's family is cultivated - later on also being proved by the bookcase of the family. The dialogue swells and fades, guiding the audience through intense emotions and foreshadowing the complexities and depth of the story. This integration of diegetic sounds enhances the sensory experience and adds meaning to the narrative, creating a peaceful scenario of somewhere in Northern Italy. Furthermore, the film also provides an intertitle to give the information of location in the significant white chalk-style text which can give a hint of freedom as those can be related as some scramble in a diary.
Furthermore, the use of silence in the opening scenes contributes to the cinematic quality of the film. The absence of talking allows the viewers to focus on the small details and subtle gestures, deepening their connection with the characters. This deliberate choice creates a sense of intimacy, drawing the audience into the world of the film and setting the stage for the emotional journey that lies ahead. It is believed that the most enjoyable foley of "Call Me By Your Name" has been found during those empty spots of human voice.
Another aspect that contributes to the cinematic nature of the opening is the attention to detail in the mise-en-scรจne. Every object and location is meticulously chosen to create an authentic and immersive experience. From the vintage furnishings in the house to the vibrant colors of the surrounding landscape, each element adds depth and meaning to the narrative. The director's meticulous attention to detail aids in creating a visual feast that captivates the audience from the very beginning.
To sum up, the opening of "Call Me By Your Name" is undoubtedly cinematic, drawing the viewers into a visually stunning world filled with emotions and beauty. The cinematography, soundtrack, use of silence, and attention to detail all contribute to the overall cinematic quality of the film. Luca Guadagnino's directorial choices work together seamlessly, creating an immersive and captivating experience that sets the stage for the rest of the story. Through this opening, the audience is transported to a world where love, desire, and self-discovery intertwine, leaving them eagerly anticipating the journey that lies ahead.
"Sony Picture Classics" appears as a white using Arial Condensed font with widths made extra-condensed capslock as those horizontal strokes are thicker than vertical ones. The idents create a strong contrast with its almost neon blue background (to be exact: It's hexadecimal color code #342cf9 and a shade of blue-magenta) with a long line above the words that are the same size as the verticals. Only appears for 2 seconds in the official trailer and not to forget to mention that this did not appear in the movie opening. "Sony Picture Classics" shows itself by fading the previous scene to black, and disappearing using the same method.
♡ Description
The movie is a coming-of-age novel written by Andrรฉ Aciman, later adapted into a film of the same name. The title of the movie, "Call Me By Your Name", references Oliver and Elio's vow to address each other by name, acknowledging that in the words of director Guadagnino during a Q&A session, "The other person makes you beautiful - enlightens you, elevates you.". Set in the summer of 1983 in Italy, the story revolves around the blossoming relationship between Elio Perlman, a seventeen-year-old boy, and Oliver, a twenty-four-year-old American scholar.
At the start of the movie, a white title card read "Summer 1983" in something that almost seems like Rock Salt font but thinner in width. Some people suggest this might be a handwriting one as the letters don't have the same size as each other. However, three years ago, a fan of this movie released a font that is the most similar to the original and called it "Peachy". Meanwhile, we can see a young teen girl lying on her bed, wearing a red top with white strikes and short jeans - matched w, matching create a playful vibe. At the same time, we're getting suggestions by the film that Elio is getting dressed and then see him throwing clothes on the bed. Therefore we can guess that he has a mischievous personality. Meanwhile, we can see a young teen girl lying on her bed, wearing a red top with white strikes and short jeans, matching her shoes to create a playful vibe. Then they have a little chitchat, all evidence shows that they form a very knit-tight bond. A car machine can be heard right shortly after and the camera focuses on Elio as he walks out. Another title card appears, written as "Somewhere in Northern Italy". Later on, the movie shows the POV of Elio as he looks through the window. Before that, we can see that he has not fully put on his too, and the girl who was lying on the bed also gets up to feed her curiosity.
A young man in a blue t-shirt and long trousers steps out of the car by the narrative view of Elio, following him are the greets of the family's oldest people. Then his dad shouted out: "Elio!" reminded our main character to come down and say hello to the newcomer. Then we saw him rush out of the room to the living room, just to later lead Oliver up again to the room he used to be there before. Here, the movie lets Oliver jump into bed for a nap due to his tiredness - however, at this point, I think the actors didn't give enough hints previously to actually suggest that, which happens to affect this action of Oliver being ununderstandable.
Then, after the younger one in the room complains that his room has been overtaken by the men in bed, they switch to the silent night of Italy. We can see Elio's passion for music by seeing him spending time in light surroundings in the darker sky. And a bell rang, telling that the dinner was ready.
♡ Genre & audience
Genre: Romance, Slide of Life, Drama, Coming-of-age story.
How this movie itself fits in the MAIN genre:
A. ROMANCE
Even though the film director contradicts categorizing this movie as a romantic screenplay inFantastic Man“The movie is very tragic, people think it’s very romantic, but I think it’s tragic. The honesty of Elio (Chalamet) is crushed by the dishonesty of Oliver (Hammer), and when Elio cries, he cries over the fact he’s being stabbed to death by Oliver’s lies, which happens to us every day in relationships.” However, the film's opening and the whole movie have clearly suggested that "Call Me By Your Name" is a love story.
Throughout the story, the lush Italian countryside serves as a vibrant backdrop, intensifying the emotional depth of the characters' experiences. Elio's introspection and vulnerability are vividly depicted; the plot primarily focuses on Elio's perspective as he navigates his sexual awakening and explores his feelings for Oliver. Initially, Elio finds himself attracted to Oliver's charisma and confidence. As the summer progresses, their friendship deepens, leading to a beautiful and passionate romance. The narrative intricately portrays the complexities of desire, love, and self-discovery as well as accentuates the fleeting nature of their summer relationship, conveying a sense of longing and melancholy.
♡ Mise-en-scene & tone setting
One interesting to point out is that everyone, except Annella and Elio, wears neutral-tone clothes which is likely to represent two things: they are mature grown and Italian colors. According to several websites, pick neutral and high-quality basic to dress like an Italian. If so, this represent anything; for Oliver, this can imply that he's trying to blend in, for the family, this might just be a casual thing. However for the youngster by choosing the opposite. Bright colors are colors that command attention due to their hue, brightness, or both. Most people associate bright colors with happiness, compassion, sacrifice, danger, and courage. But it is just not any normal bright color, it is red. Modern surveys in Europe and the United States show red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love, and joy - perfectly capturing Elio's journey throughout the movie.
Notice how the color gradient of the scene works: Light colors are related to stillness, peace, cleanliness, and softness. According to The Playlist, " Luca Guadagnino's “Call Me By Your Name” hues and tones are immeasurably rapturous. Each frame consists of blues, yellows, greens, all playing their part to purport a seductive atmosphere." This also reviews the genre of "Call Me By Your Name perfectly.
Furthermore, after the younger one in the room complains that his room has been overtaken by the men in bed, they switch to the silent night of Italy. And a bell rang, telling that the dinner was ready - which is an interesting detail as the bell rang to announce that meal wasbelieved to exist in the 20th century; shows that the film producer pays a lot of atteintion to creating that atmosphere.
The villa itself was carefully chosen by the film director: The main facade is characterized by an archway with a vaulted ceiling, above which is a terrace accessed from the first floor. The entrance is magnificent, ancient, and sculpted in a treasury with a rose in the center, enhanced by an ashlar surround. On both sides are the lobby and two other rooms, in the middle is the main staircase. From the central staircase, you can enter the service area, which contains many rooms supporting the main body. The main hall has a beautiful frescoed ceiling, created in the 16th century by Aurelio Busso, a student of Raphael. The first floor of the main part has a very similar spatial distribution to the ground floor, with a large central hallway and four large rooms with corresponding en suite bathrooms as well as one smaller room. The ceilings are all wooden and covered. Finally, there is a cellar located in the center of the villa, which can be accessed via the central staircase. There are 2 buildings attached to the property: the first building is called the farmer's house, located on the west side of the property, and the second smaller building is in the property located to the left of the entrance and is used as a place of care. All designed in Mediterranean style - this villa surely reflect the way Italians loves to build their house. Again, the decoration inspired by Art Deco - a very famous art trend in Europe around the 20th century supports the background of the movie such as the ceiling of the dining room, the rounded gates in the corridors, and a humorous bookcase, etc. All combine to make a good flow of romantic feeling.
The Daily Northwestern, quotes: "Nature appears so often that it almost becomes a character itself, weaving in and out of the human love story. At a point, the boundary between nature and humans blurs — and eventually fades. Elio and Oliver aren't out camping every night or hiking through the backwoods."
The light background and sunlight are exposed to an almost too bright for film color; however, this is believed just to add some flavor for the vibe the "Call Me By Your Name" gives off: Playful, hopeful, and romantic.
♡ Camera movement
The camera movement in the opening scene is characterized by a mix of tracking and panning shots that follow the characters as they move through the landscape. This movement adds a sense of dynamism and energy to the scene, drawing the viewer into the world of the film and setting the stage for the emotional journey that lies ahead.
One of the most striking aspects of the camera movement in the opening scene is the use of natural light. The director's choice to film in natural light creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the narrative. This use of light also allows for a greater depth of field, which accentuates the beauty of the landscape and enhances the overall visual experience.
Furthermore, the director's use of medium shots in the opening scene creates a sense of intimacy and connection with the characters. The camera captures the characters in the frame while also capturing their surroundings, providing a greater context for the narrative. This use of medium shots also allows for a greater range of motion, allowing the camera to follow the characters as they move through the landscape.
