THE 4 key concepts OF MEDIA

‧͙⁺˚*・༓☾ ☽༓・*˚⁺‧͙

The four key concepts (Industry/Representation/Language/Audiencerefer to crucial elements in understanding and analyzing various forms of media.

1. Industry: In the context of media, the industry refers to the specific field or sector in which the media takes place. It is essential to consider the industry because different industries have distinct norms, practices, and expectations. Understanding the industry helps tailor the communication to align with its specific requirements.

2. Representation: Representation in media refers to how ideas, concepts, or people are portrayed or depicted. It involves the choices made regarding language, visuals, symbols, and other forms of representation. The representation determines how the intended message is conveyed and perceived by the audience. It is essential to carefully consider terms to ensure accuracy, and inclusivity, and to avoid stereotypes or biased portrayals.

3. Language: Language is the medium through which media is conveyed. It encompasses both verbal and non-verbal elements, including written and spoken words, tone, style, expression, and body language. Choosing the appropriate language is crucial to effectively communicating with the intended audience. It is necessary to consider factors such as clarity, conciseness, cultural sensitivity, and the use of language that aligns with the audience's preferences and expectations.

4. Audience: The audience is the intended recipients or target group of the communication. Understanding the audience's characteristics, preferences, needs, and expectations is vital for effective communication. Tailoring the message to suit the audience helps ensure it is relevant, engaging, and easily understandable. Considering audience demographics, cultural background, prior knowledge, and interests assists in delivering the message in a way that resonates with them

Now we will look at some of the works that belong to a very well-known animated movie which is based on a multiplayer online battle arena video game built by Riot Game - League of Legends.

Inspired by a video game adaptation and then into TV and film - I believe Arcane but itself onto 2 boats that are connected by the characters: the Film Industry and the Game Industry. When Arcane was first released, this movie immediately received loads of attention as Rotten Tomatoes gave the TV series a 100% approval rating. The website’s reception was because of the show’s good first impression and one of the best 2D and 3D animations.

How did Arcane successfully please both sides?
For the game-fan: Keeping the vibes, the original, and the skill set - they dive more into the backstory and build up over time. By that, the characters and the plot did not become too strange and seem illogical but rather attractive with magnificent character development.

For the film newcomers: For an action animated movie, research has shown that all that starts with a great script, a well-crafted concept, and a storyboard - an innovative opening that hooks people's attention is often what results will be greatness. According to DeeDee Studio, Chitralekha Studios, and many others, there are several "doors" to get through in the stage of producing an animated movie which can be categorized into 5 main parts: Script, Visual, Style, Soundtrack, and Voice Acting. Movies that successfully master those 5 elements or completely stand out at one have moved the industry of moving pictures. For instance: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), UP! (2009),  Coraline (2009), Pinocchio (1940), Spirited Away (2001), and so many more.

Now for the animated industry, this is a graph showing its customers:

Due to the increasing popularity of virtual animated movie presentations, North America is the greatest market for international animated films. During the projection period, the market grew as a result of the presence of significant US clients including Fox Studio, Disney, and Nickelodeon. The creation of big animation studios in the West, together with the expansion of 3D animated game production, both portend considerable growth for the North American area.

And what streaming platform did Arcane release? On Netflix - and its biggest consumer was based in America. According to a study, 47% of American citizens prefer Netflix over other web streaming platforms. Amazon Prime Video comes in second with 14%, followed by Hulu with 13.6% and Disney+ with 13%. As of Q2 2023, Europe, Middle East, and Africa have the highest number of paying customers. They gather around 79.81 million Netflix customers between them. So understanding the industry you are landing in is very important to gain success - just like Arcane did.

First and foremost, a Reddit user named Futurespacecadet posted: "I am really impressed with not only the animation but the screenwriting of Arcane. The world-building, the multi-dimensional characters that evolve in interesting ways over the episodes. Each character has a stronger motivation and an even stronger foil, in the form of another character." The words received a huge amount of atteintion and eventually came to the ears of the showrunner of Arcane!

from this:

to this.

Let's have a look at how they portrayed Jinx - the girl with blue hair whereas, in this scene, she's currently having mental health issues and an anti-social (psychopath), and her backstory tells us that she grew up in chaos. One thing to point out is that the producers of the film decided that they should change her clothing a bit to suit the atmosphere; from a split design that somewhat gives the funny crazy vibe of Harley Queen while Arcane's design reflects the inner madness as in the movie, especially in this cutscene at minute 1:00 to 1:20. Jinx realizes she's in a submissive situation and the only way to escape that is to accept the deal of Caitlyn. However, like a demon, she quickly changes her expression from innocent to a more naughty, evil side realizes her inner power, and knocks the police girl off (which was beautifully made by making her eyes glow and using the 2D style to embold power and speed of hers). This only 20 seconds has perfectly captured how shifty Jinz can be as she was portrayed to be the anti-hero of the movie. Later on, by using intense music and quick editing with vivid sketches, the producer used many symbols to show a well-built female character with obsessions and mental illness. Those elements were shown everywhere whenever Jinx faced a breakdown - creating an almost symbolic sign for the movie.

LOL Jinx vs. Arcane Jinx

Arcane places a lot of emphasis on the metaphorical meanings that various colors have, and the particular hues that are used throughout Zaun and Piltover have drawn a lot of attention. I believe I've gotten the gist of what the colors imply, but Arcane is a deep show and everything has more than one meaning. Arcane uses colors to convey several messages. Some of the colors are more obvious in what they stand for than others. The most apparent illustration is Powder/Jinx. Initially, Powder had grey eyes, but as we saw her develop into Jinx, her eyes occasionally stayed grey but would occasionally change to blue under really emotional or adrenaline-inducing situations. Her eyes changed to a brilliant pink hue after Singed injected her with Shimmer, which was the most noticeable alteration.

Throughout the movie, you can hear language differences between the inhabitants of Piltover/Zhaun. Although Zaunites tend to speak more harshly, there isn't much of an accent difference, thus I believe it was one area where they depended on the audience's suspension of disbelief. For instance, no one else possesses Viktor's adorable Russian accent. The best answer, I suppose, is that they aren't actually that different, being both melting-pot towns with inhabitants and accents from all across Runeterra and that there is some back and forth between them. The authors presumably sought to avoid using too many regional stereotypes from our culture since they didn't want to complicate the translation too much.

Back to the clip, the voice changes from where Jinx was yelling to where her acting-nervous laugh begins once again supporting that she is mentally unstable. And for Vi - the girl in red, her voice has written worried in it - which suggests a deeper relationship with Jinx. And for Catelyn, she clearly sounds on guard; indirectly telling the audience that Jinx is someone to be afraid of. For the last one, the father of our main character was screaming to have the blue-haired girl back with him. Every character has a great voice actor and extremely good editing as some believe that the production team has done a great job on this one particular scene.
